Ikaria, spared from mass tourism, is a paradise for individual travellers, nature and hiking enthusiasts. Tourism is mainly centred in the coastal towns of Armenistis, Gialiskari and Nas. This is also where the famous sandy beaches of Livadi and Mesakti with their crystal-clear turquoise sea are located.
Ikaria is one of the wildest and most unspoilt islands in Greece. It is also known as the beautiful unknown of the Aegean. The Atheras mountain range, up to 1040 metres high, divides the island into the rugged south, which plunges steeply into the sea, and the gentler, densely wooded slopes of the north. Here you will find extensive pine forests, green river valleys with plane trees and flowering oleanders and in between the widely scattered houses of the villages. The vegetable gardens, vineyards, olive, fruit, chestnut and walnut trees are laid out on terraces. There are beehives everywhere - the flavoursome Ikaria honey is delicious. At higher altitudes, the landscape consists of stone and holm oak forests, plateaus with ferns and rocky deserts made up of huge granite blocks and bizarre rock formations. From up there, on a clear day, you have an unforgettable view over the entire Aegean Sea from the Cyclades to the Dodecanese and the north-east Aegean islands.
Armenistis is located on the lovely north-west side of Ikaria. The former fishing village has become the main attraction on the island of Ikaria due to its beautiful long sandy beaches. However, it only gets crowded in August, when the entire population of Athens goes on holiday. Otherwise, the village makes a rather sleepy impression with a few medium-sized to small hotels and several guesthouses and private landlords.
Surfing:Mesakti beach is one of the best surf spots in Greece
Climbing and bouldering: Ikaria's rock faces offer both beginners and experienced climbers a varied selection with 5 sectors and over 120 routes.
Mountain biking and cycling tours: even if there are only a few routes listed in the popular apps, mountain bikers will get their money's worth in the mountains of Ikaria. If you want to ride a high-quality MTB, you should bring your own bike. With an e-bike, you can get uphill effortlessly and explore the island's forests and plateaus. There is an e-bike hire centre in Nas.
Yoga: in summer there are open yoga classes at Mesakti beach. For Yoga Retreats you can contact The Egg Greece.
There are plenty of excursion options on Ikaria. Whether in a group or on your own, Ikaria is almost too good for a pure beach and bathing holiday. There are plenty of more or less well-marked hiking trails on the island and more of the old, forgotten footpaths are being opened up for hikers. We will be happy to give you tips for excursions and hikes.
The natural beauty of Ikaria can also be easily explored by bike, preferably by e-bike, which allows you to master the small country roads and tracks through the mountains without too much effort. There is a hire station for e-mountain bikes in Nas.
The hot mineral springs on the south side of Ikaria have been known for their healing properties since classical Greece. We particularly recommend the hot springs of Lefkada, which form a unique natural spa in a rock pool.
