Die Insel Ikaria, vom Massentourismus verschont, erhebt sich mit seiner langgezogenen Gebirgskette westlich von Samos. Zeigt der Süden Ikarias ein karstiges, schroffes, felsiges Gesicht, so findet man auf der Nordseite genau das Gegenteil: grüne Flusstäler, üppige Bewaldung und türkisfarbene Sandstrände.
Gemäss der altgriechischen Mythologie ist dies die Stelle, an der Ikarus ins Meer stürzte, als er sich übermütig mit seinen mit Wachs befestigten Flügeln zu sehr der Sonne näherte. Archäologische Funde weisen auf einen aktiven Kult zu Ehren der Jagdgöttin Artemis hin.

Armenistis liegt auf der lieblichen Nord-Westseite Ikarias. Wegen seiner traumhaften langen Sandstrände entwickelte sich das ehemalige Fischerdorf zum Hauptanziehungspunkt der Insel Ikaria. Voll wird es jedoch nur im August, wenn sich die gesamte Athener Bevölkerung über die griechische Inselwelt verstreut. Ansonsten macht der Ort mit wenigen mittelgroßen bis kleinen Hotels und mehreren Pensionen und Privatvermietern einen eher verschlafenen Eindruck.

Ausflugsmöglichkeiten gibt es auf Ikaria jede Menge. Ob in einer Gruppe, oder auf eigene Faust, Ikaria ist für einen reinen Strand- und Badeurlaub fast zu schade. Es gibt bereits mehrere markierte Wanderpfade auf dieser Seite der Insel und es werden weitere von den alten, vergessenen Fusswegen für wanderlustige erschlossen. Essen, Trinken, Ausgehen: Armenistis und der Ausflugsort Nas verfügenüber mehrere kleine Tavernen mit guter griechischer Küche, darunter auch viele vegetarische Gerichte. Dazu gibt es eine ausgezeichnete Konditorei mit Café und einige Bars. Die zwei Diskotheken sind nur in der Hauptsaison geöffnet.

Einkaufen: In Armenistis gibt es einen Supermarkt mit einem relativ guten Sortiment und einige kleine Läden mit Kunsthandwerk und Souvenirs.

Ärzte: Gemeindeärzte in Christos Rachon und Evdilos, kleines Krankenhaus in Agios Kirykos.

ACHTUNG: Banken mit Bankomat gibt es nur im 17 km entfernten Evdilos und in Agios Kirykos.

Unspoiled by mass tourism, the mountainous shape of Ikaria rises from the Agean Sea to the west of Samos. While the southern side of the island shows a karst and rocky landscape, you will find just the oposite on the northern side: green valleys, woods, sandy beaches and a tourquoise-coloured sea.

Old greek myths tell the story of antique times and how the island got its name:
Ikarus, the boistrous young son of Daidalus, while fleeing from Crete, came too close to the sun with his home-made wings made of wax and feathers, and fell into the Ikarian sea. The main goddness of the island was Artemis. Ruins, like the old temple at Nas, bear witnesses to the old cult.

Armenistis is situated on the lovely northern side of Ikaria. Thanks to its wonderful beaches, the former fishermen's hamlet has become an attractive destination for visitors. But it is only in August, when the entire population of Athens spreads over the islands, that it gets crowded here. During the rest of the year, the village, with some smaller and medium-sized hotels, and inns, is pleasant and quiet.

Hiking possibilities are another attraction of the island. Either in a group or on your own - it would be a pity to miss the chance to discover the beauty of nature in the mountains. There are several marked hiking trails leading through the impressive landscape.
 
Cars, scooters and mountainbikes can be rented in Evdilos and Armenistis and we can help you book a vehicle.

Restaurants, bars and nightlife: there are many taverns and bars in Armenistis and Nas, where you can enjoy Greek cooking, including vegetarian meals. Two discotheques next to the beach are open only during the high season.

Shopping: in Armenistis you find a supermarket and some smaller shops with art crafts and souvenirs. Foreign newspapers are delivered irregularly and with some delay.

Health care: in Armenistis there is a doctor´s office. Other doctors can be found in Christos Rachon (7 km away) and Evdilos. Agios Kirykos has a small hospital. Pharmacies are located in Christos Rachon und Evdilos.

Cash: banks with cash dispensers can only be found in Agios Kirykos and Evdilos . In Armenistis you can exchange foreign currency and cash traveller's cheques .
